Cardiology

At the WVU Medicine Children’s Heart Center, we understand that learning your child may have a heart condition can be overwhelming. When that happens, we’re here to guide you and your child on your journey.

As the only tertiary care pediatric cardiac program in the state that diagnoses and treats heart conditions, we have the experience and care your child needs. And many of our providers lead or take part in federally-funded research projects – work that will help to pave the way for breakthrough treatments.

Conditions We Treat

We treat many different heart conditions, including:

  • Arrhythmias (including genetic arrhythmia syndromes)
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Genetic abnormalities and syndromes associated with heart abnormalities
  • Hyperlipidemia
  • Kawasaki disease
  • Myocarditis
  • Rheumatic heart disease

Treatments and Services

At the WVU Medicine Children’s Heart Center, we offer three different types of pediatric heart treatment and services, including:

  • Diagnostic cardiac imaging
  • Electrophysiology
  • Interventional cardiology

Diagnostic cardiac imaging

Diagnostic cardiac imaging is a non-invasive way to evaluate the structure, function, and hemodynamics (blood flow dynamics) of the heart. These images allow your child’s doctor to accurately diagnose their heart condition. Our diagnostic cardiac imaging services include:

  • Computed tomography angiography (CTA)
  • Echocardiography

    • Fetal echocardiogram
    • Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE)
    • Transthoracic echocardiogram
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Interventional cardiology

Interventional cardiology uses catheters to treat structural heart diseases. We offer many types of these procedures, including:

  • Atrial septal defect closure
  • Balloon angioplasty and valvuloplasty
  • Diagnostic cardiac catheterization
  • Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure
  • Stent placement for focal stenosis
  • Transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement

Electrophysiology

Electrophysiology helps diagnose and treat abnormal electrical activities of the heart. (It’s this electrical system that controls how the heart beats.) Our services include:

  • 3D electrophysiological mapping
  • Ablation of anomalous electrical pathways using radiofrequency or cryoablative technology
  • Electrocardiography (EKG or ECG)
  • Holter and event monitoring
  • Implantable cardioverter defibrillators
  • Implantable loop recorders
  • Pacemakers

Pediatric Cardiology Clinics

Caring for a child with a heart condition or disease calls for experienced, attentive care. We’ve created several specialty clinics to ensure your child gets the care they need, when they need it. During clinics, we work with children, families, and providers in other departments (such as genetics and neurology) to conveniently deliver care, support, and resources for your entire family.

Our clinics include:

  • Adult congenital heart disease
  • Arrythmia and genetic arrhythmia syndrome clinic
  • Cardio genetics clinic
  • Connective tissue disorder clinic
  • Lipid clinic
  • Muscular dystrophy clinic
  • Pediatric pacemaker clinic

We also understand it can sometimes be a challenge to drive to our main campus. So, we’ve created nine outreach clinics that bring care close to your home.
