WVU Medicine Children’s provides advanced care for injuries or diseases of the musculoskeletal system, including the bones, joints, muscles, and nerves that enable movement. We provide high-quality care for patients from birth to 18 years of age covering the entire spectrum of pediatric orthopaedic problems.

We understand that the care of orthopaedic conditions in growing children is different from that of adults and requires special knowledge, sensitivity, and skill. Our fellowship-trained pediatric orthopaedic surgeons and supporting team members work closely with many other pediatric subspecialists throughout WVU Medicine Children’s to most effectively treat virtually any pediatric orthopaedic need.

WVU Medicine Children’s operates orthopaedic satellite clinics in Charles Town, Summersville, and Parkersburg, West Virginia, to ensure our services are more accessible for those who live farther away from Morgantown.

Conditions We Treat

WVU Medicine Children’s experts treat a wide range of pediatric orthopaedic conditions, including:

  • Bone and soft tissue tumors (benign and malignant)
  • Congenital abnormalities (club feet, hip dysplasia, additional fingers or toes)
  • Developmental disorders of the skeleton, muscles, and joints
  • Dislocations and fractures
  • Limb-length discrepancies (deformity correction, limb lengthening)
  • Musculoskeletal infections
  • Neuromuscular diseases (cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy)

Treatments and Services

WVU Medicine Children’s uses the most advanced technology and imaging to assess your child’s orthopaedic condition. We use 3D CT scanning, functional MRI, and EOS Imaging, which is a safer and faster imaging system for children that uses a reduced amount of radiation compared to traditional imaging. We will communicate with you and your child throughout evaluation and treatment to ensure that the best care decisions are made at every stage of treatment.

The pediatric orthopaedic surgery team treats children throughout West Virginia and the surrounding region. Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive surgical techniques with fewer incisions and a quicker recovery time. Critical air and ground transportation that is especially adapted for pediatric patients is also available when necessary.

Some of our most advanced treatments for pediatric orthopaedic conditions include:

MAGEC®: Magnetically controlled spinal rod system

This technology is a non-invasive treatment for children with early onset scoliosis that eliminates repeated operations and anesthetics. A magnetically-driven expandable rod is implanted along the patient’s spine, and no further operations are needed after the rod is in place. An orthopaedic physician is able to adjust the length of the implanted rod using a handheld magnet.

PRECICE®: Magnetically controlled limb lengthening system

The technology is a less-invasive procedure for children who have had an injury or developmental issue that has created a noticeable leg-length discrepancy. A magnetically-driven implant is used instead of a bulky metal device worn on the outside of the leg. A physician holds a magnet over top of the area, and it lengthens the bone in very small amounts. The child does not experience any pain. Parents are instructed on how to use the magnets at home. Once the desired length has been achieved, the lengthening is stopped, and a new bone forms in the gap.
