Pediatric Acute Care Unit (PACU)

Providers and staff on this 34-bed unit are experienced in providing the highest level of treatment for a wide range of pediatric needs – from children with cancer or a heart condition to children who need a tonsillectomy or diabetes treatment. Procedures are performed in a special room to help each child feel safe in their hospital room.

The WVU Medicine Children’s Acute Care Unit provides care for infants, children, and adolescents who are recovering from an illness, injury, or surgery. The unit also features dedicated protective environment rooms for high-risk, immunocompromised children with lifelong illnesses, such as cancer or cystic fibrosis.

Our caregivers represent more than 90 pediatric specialty areas, including nationally recognized programs for congenital heart disease and pediatric neurosurgery. Our pediatric nursing staff can be counted among the most skilled professionals at WVU Medicine, with some veteran nurses having more than 30 years of experience.

To provide a better experience for pediatric patients, our Child Life Program provides children with an activity room and a teen room. Gaming systems are also available in each patient’s room, and therapy dogs make visits to the unit. We encourage parents to stay with their child, and visitation is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Beds for parents are available in each child’s room.
